Fonduri elvetiene pt. extinderea transportului ecologic cu troleibuze in orasul ceh Ostrava.

Quote:
In Ostrava, Switzerland is supporting the construction of a three-kilometre trolley bus line and five bus stops suitable for disabled passengers. This will result in better connections into the city centre and a reduction in the high levels of air pollution

Ostrava is the third-largest city in the Czech Republic and the administrative centre of the Moravian-Silesian region. Moravia-Silesia is one of the lesser developed regions in the East of the country and a focal region for the Swiss enlargement contribution. Levels of fine particulate pollution are especially high here. Ostrava is the centre of heavy industry and ranks among the worst EU cities for air pollution. Smog warnings are particularly common in winter. City traffic also contributes to the high levels of air pollution.

7500 passengers to benefit from new trolley bus line

To reduce the levels of particulate pollution, a three-kilometre trolley bus line is being built in Ostrava with the Swiss enlargement contribution. This will link the city centre with the terminal in Hranecnik, an important hub for trams, trolley buses and suburban buses. Thanks to these building measures, the diesel buses currently in use can be replaced by environmentally friendly trolley buses. In addition, more passengers will use public transport.

Five bus stops will also be converted to accommodate disabled passengers. During peak times, in particular, numerous low-floor trolley buses will be used so that passengers with impaired mobility do not need to navigate steps when boarding the vehicle.

Around 7500 passengers will travel on the new trolley bus line and make use of the improved connections every day. The 300000 or so residents of Ostrava will benefit from better air quality and less noise as fewer diesel buses will be in operation and more passengers will leave their vehicles at home in favour of public transport.

Other public transport projects

Switzerland is investing around CHF 30 million in six projects aimed at promoting public transport in the Czech Republic. Some twelve million passengers stand to benefit from three new transport terminals, one tram line and one trolley bus line, as well as a better trans-portation network connectivity. Four of the six projects are taking place in structurally weak regions in the east of the Czech Republic.
