La începutul anilor '80 s-a pus piatra de temelie a ambiţiosului proiect de asigurare a unui sistem de transport public de mare capacitate, inteligent, eficient şi ecologic, accesibil şi predictibil.

Peste 10 ani devenea "modelul Karlsruhe", model ce s-a rāspãndit rapid în aglomerāri urbane din Germania, Franţa, Austria, Anglia, Ungaria: tramvai/metrou uşor la suprafaţă, metrou în subteran şi tren ce foloseşte infrastructura feroviară statală. Aşadar, acelaşi ecartament, dar voltaj diferit în reţeaua electrică.

Sistemul este vast şi consider că ar fi nevoie de două-trei zile pentru a-l parcurge, pentru a-l aprofunda. Totuşi, am reuşit să surprind în câteva cadre, aspecte din Karlsruhe şi Ettlingen, suficiente pentru a pune în valoare cel mai versatil concept de transport din Europa.
