Beijing Public Transport Holdings, Ltd. (BPT) will launch 400 electric trolley buses in 2014, reported d1ev.com.

BPT recently called for bids for its “100 double-source electric trolley buses demonstration operation project” and CITIC Guoan Mengguli (MGL) won the order of 100 sets of power batteries, said the report.

BPT will transfer the original lead-acid battery system into double-source lithium-ion battery system to fulfill the operational demands. Each of the 100 buses in the project will be equipped with a 40 kWh double-source lithium-ion battery set after upgrading with an extended range of over 30 kilometers under off-line condition.

Moreover, about 500 diesel engine buses operating in 20 bus lines will be replaced by electric trolley buses annually starting from 2017, indicating a revival of electric trolley bus usage, said the report.

According to Wang Jian, expert in public transportation of Chongqing Jiaotong University, electric trolley buses have been excluded from the new round of NEV subsidy policy. However, with a similar cost and much higher energy efficiency than traditional buses, electric trolley buses also can save large amount of funds in the construction of charging stations. Thus, electric trolley buses should be vigorously promoted by the government, said Wang.
