History

In 1882 a contract was signed between Riga City Council and Swiss Consul General in Russia about building a horse driven tram route in Riga.

In 1900 city council signed a contract about rebuilding certain tram routes into electrical trams over the next 2.5 years. Until WWI the extension of tram lines continued and reached 48km length. It transported 52`000`000 passangers. During war almost all trams were transported to Moscow or St.Petersburg.

After gaining independance trams were operated by Belgian companies which mostly thought about income rather then expansion. The infrastructure got worse. In 1931 trams got under city council control. Slowly the tracks were updated and the number passanger grew.

After WWII the tram infrastructure was completly demolished.The tracks and trams were renovated with the help of everyone who wanted to do so - even army and children.

The evergrowing number of passangers begun to grow into a problem. From the money which was meant for trams into a new project and in 1947 the firsttroleybus route was opened. The idea was to expand tram further away from the center freeing it for trolleybuses.

In the begining the troleybuss service was hard but in the middle of 1950ties USSR made troleybuses were replaced by Czechoslovakian made trolleybuses.

Testand incrucisari tramvai-troleibuz modernizate cu un tramvai dotat si cu captator si cu pantograf.

La Riga, separatorii de retea, mai ales cei tramvai - troleibuz si elementele de sustinere a retelei sunt diferiti de cei cu care suntem obisnuiti noi fiindca acolo si reteaua de tramvai a fost gandita pentru utilizarea tramvaielor cu alimentare prin captator, nu prin pantograf. Dupa introducerea tramvaielor Skoda 15T a fost necesara modificarea retelei de contact mai ales in zona intersectiilor cu alte retele de tramvai sau troleibuz. Deocamdata, tramvaiele noi in Riga sunt restrictionate numai pe traseul 6, unde a fost modificata reteaua, inclusiv prinderile acestea. Incrucisarile sunt compatibile si cu randunici si cu patinele pantografelor. Fata de cele vechi au fost adaugate niste sanii in plus pentru ca patina pantografului sa treaca pe sub inimile lor.
