MOPC confirms plans for electric Metrobús systemParaguay's public works and communications ministry (MOPC) has confirmed plans for an electric trolleybus system in capital Asunción.
An electric system is a much more sustainable option than running diesel buses, both environmentally and economically, the ministry said in a statement.
MOPC is currently carrying out feasibility studies for the trolleybus with Itaipu Binacional, operator of the Itaipu hydroelectric dam on the Brazil-Paraguay border, deputy transport minister Luis Pereira told BNamericas recently. The study should wrap up by mid-year.
The electric system would cost around US$25mn more than the planned BRT, with the 400 buses costing some US$90mn in total, but would be much cheaper to operate, according to Pereira.
The Metrobús project involves an 18km line linking Asunción with the San Lorenzo district.
